MEFORE K40 Controller Board Upgrade

A 2-axis GRBL controller that bolts into the K40's stock board position and opens the machine to LightBurn. It adds PWM grayscale, adjustable motor current and safety inputs the stock M2 Nano never had.

  • FirmwareGRBL, 2-axis
  • SoftwareLightBurn or HCTriy
  • Processor32-bit GD32 with A4988 drivers
  • Board size97 x 64mm, M2/M3 Nano hole layout

Right for
  • K40 owners leaving CorelLaser and LaserDRW for LightBurn
  • Photo and grayscale engraving that the stock board cannot do
  • Anyone adding lid and water interlocks to a bare-bones K40
Wrong for
  • Owners who need a Z axis for a powered bed: this is 2-axis
  • Anyone unwilling to open the electronics bay and rewire connectors
  • Mac or Linux users who want the HCTriy software, which is not described for those systems

Bolt it into the M2 Nano's mounting holes

Most K40s leave the factory with a Lihuiyu M2 Nano board, and most owners outgrow it fast. The MEFORE board, which MEFORE calls the H2, uses the same 97 by 64mm size and mounting-hole layout as the M2 and M3 Nano boards. It goes into the stock position on the stock standoffs, with no drilling.

Matching holes is only half the fit. Open your electronics bay and note what plugs into the old board. K40s differ here: some run the X motor and endstops through a flat ribbon cable, others use separate plugs for each motor and switch. Confirm with MEFORE that the H2 has a connector for each lead you find, and what supply voltage it expects from your K40's power supply.

The swap itself, done calmly:

  1. Unplug the machine and wait a few minutes. The laser power supply holds charge after the cord comes out.
  2. Photograph every connector on the old board before touching anything, then label each lead with tape.
  3. Unplug and unscrew the M2 Nano. Keep it in an antistatic bag as a fallback.
  4. Mount the H2 on the same standoffs and reconnect motors, endstops, power and the laser fire line.
  5. Check twice against your photos before power goes back on.
High voltage warning: the K40's laser power supply drives the tube at many thousands of volts. Never work in the electronics bay with the machine plugged in, and keep fingers off the tube's anode lead at all times.

The K40's supply and its pins are covered in the K40 power supply and tube guide. Read the fire-line section there before you connect the new board.

Move from CorelLaser to LightBurn over GRBL

The main reason to fit this board is software. The stock M2 Nano speaks its own protocol, so it runs CorelLaser, LaserDRW or the free K40 Whisperer, and LightBurn does not support it. The H2 runs GRBL, which LightBurn does support, along with MEFORE's own HCTriy software.

HCTriy imports SVG, DXF and PNG files, handles layout, multi-layer settings, toolpath preview and machine control. LightBurn is the more common choice among K40 owners, and it needs a paid licence. Either way, the GRBL firmware gives you real control of each layer's speed and power.

What changes in daily use:

  • True grayscale. PWM power scaling from 0 to 100 percent lets photo engraves shade by power, where the stock board can only switch the beam on and off.
  • Per-layer power. Cut and engrave layers each carry their own power setting, instead of one setting on the front-panel dial.
  • Fast, steady data. The 32-bit GD32 chip and a CH341 USB link at 921,600 baud keep dense engraves from stuttering on buffer lag.
  • Test fire. The EX3 port gives adjustable low-power spotting to check beam position without burning the work.

On a Windows PC, install the CH341 USB driver first, then add the machine in LightBurn as a GRBL device at 921,600 baud. Set the work area to your K40's real travel.

Keep the current meter or limiter in the loop. Software power is a percentage of whatever ceiling the power supply allows. Holding the tube current to a safe maximum is still the job of the hardware, and it decides how long the tube lasts. The K40 software guide compares LightBurn, K40 Whisperer and CorelLaser side by side.

Wire the lid and water interlocks the factory skipped

The stock K40 is blunt about safety: many ship with no lid switch and no water-flow switch at all. The tube runs whether the lid is up or the pump has died. The H2 board has inputs for both, and wiring them is the best hour you can spend on this upgrade.

Three layers of protection come with the board:

  • Lid open protection. A switch on the lid stops the laser the moment the cover lifts. A CO2 beam is invisible, and a reflection off a mirror mount can blind.
  • Water protection. A flow switch in the coolant line stops the laser if water stops moving. A tube fired dry can crack within seconds.
  • Static laser protection. If power is above 20 percent and the head stops moving for 5 seconds, the board cuts the beam to stop a fire starting on one spot. The threshold and time are adjustable, and it can be turned off.

Leave the static cutoff on. The only time it trips on purpose is a stalled head or a software hang, which is exactly when you want the beam off.

Test every interlock: with a scrap on the bed and your glasses on, lift the lid during a low-power job, then pinch the coolant hose. The beam must stop both times. An interlock you have never tested is a guess, not a safety device.

Wire the switches with the machine unplugged, and route the leads away from the tube's high-voltage wire. If your chiller has its own alarm, it warns you; the board's water input is what stops the tube. The K40 setup and safety guide covers glasses, fumes and fire kit.

Tune steps, current and homing before the first job

The H2 exposes its firmware settings, which is a gift and a chore. Nothing is locked, so you can match the board to your K40 exactly. Nothing is guaranteed right out of the box, so plan an evening for setup before the first real job.

  1. Motor direction. Jog each axis and flip the direction setting if the head moves the wrong way.
  2. Work area. Set X and Y to your machine's real travel, roughly 300 by 200mm on a stock K40.
  3. Steps per mm. Cut a 100mm square, measure it with calipers and correct the value for each axis.
  4. Motor current. Set run and hold current high enough to stop skipped steps and low enough to keep motors cool.
  5. Limit switches. Pick mechanical or inductive and NO or NC to match your switches, then set homing speed and pull-off distance.
  6. Axis locking. Turn it on to hold the gantry at zero between jobs.

How it compares with the other routes:

  • The M3 Nano set keeps the stock-style software and dongle, a like-for-like replacement rather than an upgrade.
  • The OMTech K40+ comes ready for LightBurn from the factory, for buyers still choosing a machine.

The H2 is a 2-axis board, so it will not drive a powered Z table or rotary. It handles tubes from 20W to 180W, which covers any K40 tube. Once set, realign the mirrors before judging cut quality; the K40 alignment guide explains why.

Fit & install questions

Will the MEFORE board fit where my M2 Nano is?

It uses the same 97 x 64mm size and mounting-hole layout as the M2 and M3 Nano, so it mounts without drilling. Check your connectors, especially a ribbon cable, before ordering.

Does it work with LightBurn?

Yes. It runs GRBL firmware, which LightBurn supports. MEFORE's HCTriy software also works with it.

Can it do grayscale photo engraving?

Yes. It controls laser power by PWM from 0 to 100 percent, so engraves can shade by power rather than only switching the beam on and off.

Can it drive a Z table or rotary?

No. It is a 2-axis board for X and Y only.

What safety features does it add?

Inputs for a lid switch and a water-flow switch, plus a static-beam cutoff that stops the laser if the head halts for 5 seconds above 20 percent power.
