Preenex K40 Laser Engraver, VEVOR, Orion and Every Other K40 Badge

Learn to spot the common core and brand names stop mattering. Almost every blue-box K40 shares the same parts inside:

• A 700mm, 50mm-diameter 40W glass tube in a bay across the back.
• A 12mm focus lens with a 50.8mm focal length, and three 20mm mirrors.
• An M2 Nano controller that runs CorelLaser or K40 Whisperer.
• A roughly 300 x 200mm work area with a spring clamp instead of a real bed.
• An open water loop: a bucket, a small pump and two hoses.
• A weak exhaust fan and, on many units, a flimsy ground connection.

Build quality varied from batch to batch far more than from badge to badge. Two Preenex machines bought a year apart could differ more than a Preenex and a Mophorn bought the same month.

That shared core is good news for owners of an orphaned brand. Tubes, optics, heads, beds and power supplies made for the K40 fit them all, and the K40 upgrade order is the same whatever the lid says.

Treat an old Preenex like any stock K40 and it will keep working. Most failures come from four parts, and all four have standard replacements.

1. Focus lens. The first part to lose power to smoke and dust. A 12mm lens fits the stock head; an air-assist head opens up 18mm lenses.
2. Mirrors. The stock K9 glass mirrors crack and fade. Gold-coated silicon or molybdenum 20mm mirrors replace them directly.
3. Tube. A flickering discharge, or a white glow in place of the usual pink-purple, means the gas is spent. A 700mm 40W tube drops into the bay.
4. Power supply. A dead supply gives no fire at all, even with the test button. K40-specific 40W supplies share the stock layout.

Two cheap jobs belong on every old Preenex before any part swap. Run a continuity check from the case to the earth pin of the plug, and change the water in the bucket for distilled water with no algae in it.

Replace in that order. A lens and a set of mirrors cost little and often bring back most of a tired machine's cut.

Before blaming the tube, clean the optics and check alignment. A careful K40 mirror alignment fixes more weak Preenex machines than any new part.

The current VEVOR keeps the 12 x 8 in work area, so jigs and files from an old K40 still fit. What changed is everything around the tube:

• 45W CO2 tube, with VEVOR rating it for more than 3,500 hours of life.
• Air assist built in to clear smoke and protect the lens.
• Rotary axis included for tumblers, bottles and other round work.
• Manual focus with a precision knob, a red-dot pointer and a focusing scale.
• LightBurn, GRBL, CorelDRAW and AutoCAD support on Windows, macOS and Linux.
• Pull-out waste tray and water-pump cooling.

VEVOR is conservative about cutting depth. It recommends staying at or under 5mm acrylic and 3mm wood, and says the machine is not for bare metal, only coated metal. Treat those figures as a clean single-pass guide; slower speeds and more passes go deeper at the cost of a wider, darker edge.

Owners of a Mophorn K40 laser cutter are in the same place as old-VEVOR owners. Replacement parts follow the blue-box pattern, and the natural new machine is either this VEVOR or the OMTech K40+ 45W.

Pick the bundle by the job, not the price tag. The CW-3000 chiller bundle suits long jobs in a warm shop, the rotary bundle suits tumblers and glasses, and the LightBurn bundle saves buying the licence separately.

Keep one habit from the Orion days: check alignment after the machine arrives. A long trip can nudge the mirrors, and a quick tape test on each one takes ten minutes.

That changes what it can do. A blue diode beam sits around 450nm, while a CO2 tube emits at 10,600nm, and materials react to the two very differently.

Glasses are not interchangeable either. Eyewear for a blue diode is rated for its wavelength and gives no stated protection at 10.6µm, and the reverse holds too.

• Want clear acrylic, fast wood cuts or glass engraving: stay with CO2.
• Want a big open bed and no water: a diode fits better.
• Unsure what a machine is: look for a wavelength in its spec. Around 450nm means diode.
